KCK basketball beats Johnson County CC for a trip to NJCAA D-II national tourney

Kansas City Kansas Community College is headed back to the NJCAA Division II national basketball tournament.

Calvin Slaughter scored 25 points and KCK topped rival Johnson County 75-68 on Friday night in Hutchinson, Kan., in the Region VI playoffs to advance to nationals.

It’s the fourth straight season that the Blue Devils have made it to the national tournament, which is scheduled for March 17-21 in Danville, Ill.

KCK beat Johnson County for the second time in three games this season.

Slaughter on Friday added seven rebounds and three assists. Isiah Sears had 17 points for Johnson County, which had beaten KCK 98-91 in the last game of the regular season.

Johnson County women lose in final

The Johnson County women lost to top-seeded Labette County (Kan.) 54-43 in Hutchinson on Friday in the Region VI women’s title game. With the victory, Labette advances to the Division II national tournament, set for March 17-21 in Port Huron, Mich.

It was the third time this season Johnson County (28-4) has lost to Labette.
