With bull named after Chiefs’ Mahomes in the mix, Brazilian rides tall at Sprint Center
Man versus beast, world-class rider vs. a snorting, athletic animal named in honor of Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes: who wins?
Neither. Not on this day, anyway.
While 22-year-old Jess Lockwood scored on his other two rides and “Mahomie” the bull elicited oohs and aahs from the Sprint Center crowd, it was Brazil native Lucas Divino who rode into Sunday’s sunset the winner of the Professional Bull Riders’ two-day Caterpillar Classic “Unleash The Beast” event in Kansas City.
Divino was a perfect 3-for-3 Sunday in capturing victory in the PBR’s annual two-day spin through KC. His 91-point performance aboard Medicine Man was among the afternoon’s highlights.
And Mahomie wasn’t the only ode to the Chiefs in the house. Cowboy Brady Sims, a Missouri native now living in Oklahoma, sported a No. 19 Chiefs jersey with his name on the back but didn’t notch a scoring ride.
Divino’s first PBR triumph netted a career-high payday of $38,430 and 117 points in the series’ world rankings.
Mahomie, brought to Sprint by Paradigm Bull Company, proved to be a worthy adversary for Montana’s Lockwood — bovine shucked human in 3.68 seconds, well short of the 8 needed to notch a score.
Lockwood, PBR’s first $4 million man, remains No. 2 in the world rankings thanks to his other two Sunday goes, both of which scored 90. But he and world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme left Kansas City with injuries: After competing here Saturday, Leme couldn’t ride at all Sunday because of a bad back.
Lockwood, the 22-year-old two-time and reigning world champ, had soared Saturday and was looking good Sunday after riding Suns Up to a 90.5-point effort in Round 1.
After Mahomie got the best of him in Round 2, Lockwood posted a fine 91-point performance on I’m Legit Too in the championship round. It was during his dismount from that ride, when one of his spurs got hung up in his bull rope, that PBR’s reigning champ strained his left hamstring.
Lockwood was to undergo an MRI Monday. His status for the tour’s next stop, Friday and Saturday in Little Rock, Arkansas, was uncertain, as is Leme’s.
Lockwood settled for third place Sunday behind runner-up Eduardo Aparecido of Brazil, earning $16,680 and 61 points. Aparecido matched countryman Divino’s 3-for-3 afternoon, scoring rides of 85, 86.5 and 89 worth $16,625 and 71.5 points.
