An NFL regular-season opener went mostly head-to-head with a pennant race on Sunday, and when it came to television ratings, the NFL won in Kansas City.

According to Nielsen, the Chiefs attracted a 30.8 rating on CBS during the broadcast of their loss to the Titans, which ran from noon to about 3:30 p.m.

The Royals’ victory over the Yankees got an 8.0 rating on Fox Sports Kansas City, which is higher than their season average. The broadcast from New York included about 30 minutes worth of the Derek Jeter retirement ceremony and ended around 4 p.m.

A single ratings point represents one percent of the approximately 942,000 television households in Kansas City market.
