No decision in first Pint-Wentz showdown as professionals
The Royals’ affiliate in the South Atlantic League is in Lexington, Ky., but a game involving two other Sally League teams took on a Kansas City flavor on Saturday, when the Rome (Ga.) Braves visited the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists.
The opposing starting pitchers that night were Rome’s Joey Wentz and Asheville’s Riley Pint, a pair of former area high school standouts.
Pint, who played at St. Thomas Aquinas, was drafted fourth overall last June by the Colorado Rockies; Wentz, a Shawnee Mission East graduate, was taken No. 40 overall by the Atlanta Braves.
Neither starter figured in the decision in their first head-to-head clash as pros.
Wentz went 5 1/3 , surrendering two earned runs while striking out seven. He’s 3-3 this season with a 3.31 ERA.
Pint surrendered two earned runs in four innings and owns a 4.72 ERA.
The box score is here.
