Goodbye, Kansas City. Star readers, you are helping strengthen our democracy

This is my last day at The Kansas City Star, and though I’m told that we don’t do “goodbye” columns here — good call, because those are boring — I can’t leave without saying thank you.

We all work for the readers, and working for you these last five years, alongside some of the most talented and dedicated journalists anywhere, has been a privilege. Thank you more than I can say for trusting me to tell your stories, sometimes at great personal risk.

To all of those who’ve helped me in this work, or have written to offer encouragement, please know how much your encouragement has meant. (And to all who’ve written the other kind of note, thank you, too, for caring enough to do that.)

Next week, I start a new job in California, where I’ll be writing a column for The Sacramento Bee.

But before I go, I want to say one more time that The Star is vital to this city, and at a time when Russian-level (and sometimes Russian-sponsored) disinformation is so prevalent, it’s no exaggeration to say that in subscribing to this newspaper, you are supporting democracy itself.
