Readers sound off on Gov. Sam Brownback, school funding, KCI

Hail Brownback

Babylonian, Egyptian, Ottoman, British and Roman, they all have collapsed. Here in Kansas we have ours.

Rome had Caesar Augustus. We have Caesar Sam Disgust Us. Rome had Nero, who fiddled while the city burned. We have Zero, who fiddled with the numbers (some type of digital mess that leaves only him feeling good), while Kansas’ budget went up in flames.

Rome had Caesar Maximus, we have Caesar Gluteus Maximus.

At least when Julius was messing up in Rome there was a group that took matters in its own hands. Et tu, Brute? Here in Kansas, the Legislature is filled with lemmings. No such thing as statesmen, or anyone, in the Republican Party with the backbone to say enough.

All hail to Caesar.

Better fund schools

I’m a bit concerned about the funding of education in Kansas. What funding we are getting for our schools is usually not enough.

And most of the time, it’s centered on common core things such as math, science, English and classes that are “integral” to the growth of our citizens.

I hope that in the near future we can receive the funding we need to give our schools more opportunity to truly teach students everything they need and that funding can be placed in some of the elective and fine-arts classes that are usually cut first.

Teaching students in subjects that interest them is the first step to raising creative adults for our future.

Keep KCI as is

Why have the proponents suggested taxpayers squander a billion dollars to modify Kansas City International Airport when it is already the most user-friendly in the United States?

Could it be to accommodate rental-car companies, food servers and others?

Incidentally, who put the arm on Southwest Airlines, the biggest airline in the program? Initially, Southwest spoke up in favor of its passengers, as it usually does, and then someone got to airline officials.

I have visited most airports in this country and a number of major facilities in other countries and found none as convenient as KCI.

As I follow this project, I think there’s a snake in the alfalfa.

Chiefs’ draft pick

I am a lifelong Kansas City sports fan, supporting both the Chiefs and the Royals for many years. I am repulsed by coaches, team management and owners referring to acts of abuse and violence against women as “mistakes” by the player (5-3, B1, “College coach discusses Hill”).

Describing it as a “mistake” relates it to a football player dropping a pass or a shortstop making a wild throw.

This isn’t merely semantics. It’s a deliberate attempt by those who want to benefit from an association with the athlete to buffer these atrocious acts.

Tyreek Hill didn’t just make a mistake. He assaulted and choked a pregnant woman.

I’m in favor of second chances for the truly reformed but I will never cheer for Tyreek Hill.

I don’t generally believe in litmus tests for what constitutes a good man, but any man who beats a woman is a coward of low character and should not be defended simply in the interest of benefiting from his athletic ability.

Candidate Clinton

The only experience Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has in abundance is deceiving the American public.

I completely agree that anything a man can do, a woman can do as well. But my moral and ethical compass guides me to not vote for someone as corrupt and conniving as Clinton. There are too many red flags associated with her.

Unfortunately, there are not enough allowed words in this editorial page to even begin to cover all indiscretions. This pattern of corruption began years ago when her husband, Bill Clinton, was governor of Arkansas, with Whitewater, and on, and on, and on.

She has so many lobbyists in her back pockets she needs a clown pantsuit. I hardly think someone as secretary of state who would not even protect our ambassador and three other individuals in Benghazi has our best interest at heart.

I would rather someone shoot it to me straight than pander to the crowd and tell people what they want to hear, then talk smack behind closed doors. If this pathetic excuse for a viable candidate is elected, it says a lot about the state of our country.
