Letter of the Week: Volunteering aids children

I’ve lived in the Kansas City area most of my life and have volunteered with some of the finest people in church, the Salvation Army, Special Olympics, parent teacher student associations and school district committees.

I think a very important program I had the privilege of volunteering with for one hour a week for seven years was YouthFriends.

I worked with a teacher helping first- and second-grade students struggling with their reading skills.

Most teachers have a lot of students and would appreciate community members who are concerned about struggling readers.

Some people are retired, they are business people or they are stay-at-home moms. Some people want direction and meaning for their lives.

Ask yourself, “What will my legacy be? What will they say of the life I lived?” when you’re no longer on this earth.

Be a person of compassion and concern for others.

Deborah Solomon of Independence is a professional nanny/educator and a telemarketer for an accounting firm. She and her husband, Eric, have two adult children.
