Hey, Chiefs: You’ll beat the Eagles if you avoid the trash talk and keep it humble | Opinion

More than KC luck

Kansas City can beat Philadelphia in the Super Bowl if the Chiefs are humble. No bragging or trash talk. It is said, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

If the Chiefs win, some will say it was lucky or good fortune, but it will have been more than that. Have faith that being humble enables the benefits that will provide good results.

Cork the booze

The Chiefs have given Kansas City a lot to be proud of and will continue to do so at the Super Bowl, win or lose. If our team wins, millions of viewers will watch the players proceed along our downtown streets during next week’s celebratory parade.

During our last Super Bowl parade, I was embarrassed by the drunken behavior of some of our players as they rolled along the parade route. Celebrating with excessive alcohol does not make men heroes — it makes them stupid.

Our victory parade is an opportunity to model exemplary behavior. If our players could abstain from alcohol use and abuse at least until the parade is over, the message would be clear: Our local heroes respect their bodies, honor their coach, extol each other and make this community proud with their admirable actions.

They can still have a blast. They should not need to imbibe to do that. Then, when the parade is over and the players are no longer in front of millions of viewers, they can celebrate by popping the cork if they must.

Jump for joy

Fifty-three years ago, I watched the Chiefs beat the Vikings on our black-and-white TV with my dad and brother, Don. Dad rarely showed his emotions. He grew up during the Depression and served in the Pacific during World War II. I think those experiences caused him to keep his emotions to himself.

However, when Otis Taylor scored the TD to seal the victory, Dad jumped from his chair. All three of us hugged and screamed.

This Sunday, when the Chiefs beat the Eagles, I hope every little boy and girl can hug their mom and dad and scream with joy. It will be a feeling you will never forget.

Mahomes and …

Headline after headline after headline: Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes. When he is on the field, 10 Chiefs are helping him. When he is not on the field, 11 Chiefs are helping him.

Where’s the recognition? Where are those headlines?

Tuned in, then out

However advanced your age might be, you still have decisions to make. For example, on Feb. 6, I had to decide whether to listen to my neighbor’s dog bark or turn up the sound on my TV and listen to the State of the Union address. Then I made my choice.

I guess I am getting used to my neighbor’s barking dog.

Seen this show

Watching the bantering between President Joe Biden and the Republican Congress members during the State of the Union speech brought back memories of watching the British Parliament’s televised Prime Minister’s Questions.

Childish fools

I am so tired of the people of this nation electing children to Congress. The heckling at this week’s State of the Union address was a good example of childish performance and lack of common courtesy by several GOP lawmakers.

The Republican Party has degenerated into a group of loudmouth fools. Rep. George Santos lied his way into office, and the GOP will not remove him because it needs his vote. You can bet if he were a Democrat, Republicans would be screaming from the rooftops for his expulsion.

I will be so glad when the people of this country wake up and stop reelecting those loudmouths. Republicans need to get serious and stop following Reaganomics (which has never worked) and the teachings of Newt Gingrich, and start presenting some intelligent ideas and purging their party of the noisy clowns.
