Letter to the editor: Why is it so hard to wear a mask at the grocery store?

Protect others

What does it take for grocery stores to realize the importance of everyone wearing a mask? Produce and breads are displayed in the open throughout the store, with people touching everything.

One grocery store I frequent in Raymore is a chief offender.

There must have been a dozen customers in the store who were not wearing masks when I visited on one recent afternoon. Young, old — it didn’t make a difference. There were employees who had masks on, but they were sitting below their noses. I asked an employee if the store was not requiring masks for customers, and she replied that the city of Raymore has not made it mandatory.

At least the chain’s location in Belton had a table set up in the front with masks being offered to anyone who went inside. I didn’t see this in the Raymore store — maybe because it is more interested in selling coffee at the stand up front.

This is certainly not the only grocery store not requiring masks, but I ask: Why is it more important to wear a mask at home improvement stores than at food stores?

If members of the public aren’t responsible enough to wear masks, then make it a law. Does anyone have the guts to do that?
