Letter: I’m a former Republican from Kansas. We need Democrats to clean up this mess

Vote for solvers

In a guest commentary in the September edition of Kansas Farmer magazine, Marion County farmer Paul Penner calls on the next U.S. senator from Kansas to:

▪ Restore U.S. global leadership.

▪ Seek (re)admission to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

▪ Support farm programs.

▪ End trade wars.

▪ Unify the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

▪ Fix our international alliances.

▪ Restore the Renewable Fuel Standards program.

I pick it up here: President Donald Trump caused all those problems. Sens. Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts, along with Reps. Roger Marshall, Steve Watkins and Ron Estes, condoned the creation of those problems. Who thinks for one moment that they are going to be fixed by the people who did nothing to keep them from happening?

This former moderate Republican turned Darned Democrat knows that if you want any of these Trump problems fixed, you have to vote for those Darned Democrats — you know, state Rep. Barbara Bollier, Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla, Rep. Sharice Davids, Laura Lombard and Kali Barnett.

Get out and vote. Mail in your ballot. Better yet, take it to the election office and hand in your ballot early — and only do it once.
