Letters: KC readers discuss counting the census and what protesting athletes should do
Make it count
With so much going on this year, it is easy to overlook the ongoing census. As a pediatrician practicing in the heart of Kansas City, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of completing the survey.
Many of my patient families have either not heard of the census or fear a negative impact because of their immigration, employment or other social status. The census will have a profound effect over the next 10 years on funding and resources in our community, including the many school districts that share the responsibility of educating my patients.
It is important to know that information collected by the census is not shared with other government agencies and therefore cannot negatively affect individuals who complete it. Those who have not yet responded should do so by mail or go to Census.gov to complete the survey, which is available in nearly every language prevalent in our community.
In just a few minutes, a family can be counted and contribute to a more complete assessment of our city. Our parks, our schools and our families depend on it.

Sit it out
I had to chuckle after reading the Thursday letter to the editor suggesting that Chiefs players should link arms during the national anthem and that players who don’t wish to participate should remain in the locker room. (10A)
How about this: Any player who does not wish to stand with his hand over his heart during the anthem should just remain in the locker room.
