Letter to the editor: Hawley hits nail on the head about Supreme Court disappointment
Hawley’s plea
U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri has spoken the words that many of us pro-lifers have been thinking for quite some time. Hawley recently wrote in an essay on “Public Discourse,” the online journal of the conservative think tank the Witherspoon Institute, that he will not vote to confirm a U.S. Supreme Court nominee unless he or she has been on record as recognizing Roe v. Wade as an unjust law.
One thing I have noticed is that liberal justices of the Supreme Court almost always stay united on cases, whereas the supposedly “conservative” justices do not. Whether it has been former Justice Anthony Kennedy or current Justice Neil Gorsuch and Chief Justice John Roberts, we seemingly have at least one justice who votes with the liberals.
So we are really sick of it, because I don’t believe we can predict how they will rule on cases, especially Roe v. Wade. We should stop pretending just because they were nominated by Republican presidents.
As Hawley wrote: “How long must this go on? How many more elections must there be? How many more promises must be made? How many more justices must be appointed before we will expect of our nominees what the voters already expect of us? How long before we ask our nominees to the Supreme Court of the United States to recognize Roe as the outrage that it is?”
