Wipe out vaping

As a registered nurse, I have witnessed the detrimental effects of vaping. Vapes, vape pens and electronic cigarettes are categorized as identical products and mislead consumers by posing as healthier alternatives to cigarette smoking. Both the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn users of the respiratory illnesses that can accompany these devices.

While cigarette smoking among middle and high school students has dropped tremendously in recent years, 70% of this demographic has used e-cigarettes, according to the Healthy People 2020 project launched by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Because of the amount of lung damage and the increased medical complications tied to vaping, education about the reality of these products needs to be implemented in schools.

As a nurse, I believe it is important to educate everyone — young children and adults — on the dangers of this current trend. In the future, I wish to see stricter regulations on vaping and vape products in hopes of banning them altogether.

With the current pandemic weighing heavily on our country, it is important to eliminate the use of these deadly products.
