Letters: Readers discuss the Royals’ innovation and knocking Nichols’ accomplishment

That’s Royal

Today, we need to temporarily change the Kansas City Royals’ chant.

In a major feature story this week in The Wall Street Journal under the headline, “The Royals are taking advantage of a new market efficiency,” we learned a lot about the character of the men and women who own and manage our hometown baseball team.

The story reported that the Royals were one of only two Major League Baseball teams that have not cut office staff or players in their minor and major league operations during the pandemic hiatus.

And they were the only team that had signed all five of their picks in the recent baseball draft.

So I am proposing a modification of our tried and true chant, “Let’s go, Royals!” This spectacular performance off the field has earned them a new one: “Way to go, Royals!”

Why change it?

J.C. Nichols lived in another time. A different time. Yes, he discriminated against both Jewish and African American people. He also built one of the great shopping and living districts in the United States. Many consider it the greatest.

Our city leaders might decide to rename the fountain and parkway, but does anyone seriously believe that would lead to substantive change in our culture? If it does not, why would we do it?

It appears that the quickest way to make our streets safer is to take guns away from policemen.
