Letters: KC readers discuss America’s dismal testing rate and keeping others safe

Top of his list

On March 6 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, President Donald Trump said, “Anyone who wants a test, gets a test” for the coronavirus. Now, more than two months later, only about 8 million Americans have been tested, according to The Atlantic’s COVID Tracking Project. This is unacceptable.

All medical professionals say testing is essential in reducing the spread of the coronavirus. Trump must enact the Defense Production Act to produce more tests, but he has failed to lead this effort.

Apparently, Trump doesn’t want more testing because it would reveal an increase of cases. Another stay-at-home order would hurt the economy and his reelection, which is his top priority.

Minor request

Americans have the right to protest. I believe that. I also believe that standing 6 feet from one another and wearing a mask is not too big an ask. Is that too much to request to protect your fellow Americans? Really?

If you were to get the coronavirus, those Americans who would take care of you would be at risk — and all their friends and family.

If science is wrong, you would be inconvenienced. If you are wrong, people could die
