Letter to the editor: We are Republicans and our eyes are on you, senators
We are watching
A message from a lifelong Republican to every member of the U. S. Senate: I encourage you to put country, Constitution and rule of law above party with a vote in favor of the House’s two articles of impeachment.
The events, documentation and House process plainly show President Donald Trump is inept and corrupt, and that he is putting personal vice and self-interest ahead of the United States’ welfare. He has repeatedly asked multiple countries to involve themselves in our elections and governance.
A Senate acquittal vote on your part would damage our Republican Party, undermine our constitutional separation of powers and make our country vulnerable to repeated foreign involvement within our elections.
I am a Republican veteran, businessman, father, donor and voter from the presidential campaigns of Barry Goldwater through John McCain. I support the 501(c)(4) nonprofit Republicans for the Rule of Law as well as The Lincoln Project, a new political action committee of conservatives opposed to Trump.
The Lincoln Project is asking all senators to uphold their oath of office. Its large-scale efforts will be directed at Republican senators up for reelection in 2020 and 2022 who vote against impeachment. Acquittal would be a fundamental breach of that oath of office.
We have dozens of Republican senators and governors who are 100 times more adept and less corrupt than Trump. Our country is watching Republican senators and expecting leadership during this presidential void, not more Republican corruption.
