Letters: Readers discuss Pat Roberts’ honor, the De Sousa bandwagon and Chiefs fans
Maintain honor
Sen. Pat Roberts, you have had a long, mostly honorable, career in Congress but no longer have to worry about being elected. You have the chance to make one of your final votes honorable. Vote with the truth on impeachment. You know it is the right thing to do.

It’s all politics
I sent a letter to Sen. Josh Hawley asking for a fair impeachment trial with witnesses and documents. Here is his reply, in part:
“The actions taken by Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats have made an outrageous mockery of our Constitution. With their push to advance bogus articles of impeachment, which do not even allege a crime, House Democrats are insulting the Constitution. With their attempt to overturn an election, they are betraying the American people.
“President (Donald) Trump has fought hard for working Americans and secured big wins for Missouri. Democrats in Congress just can’t accept that they lost the last election and they’ve been trying to reverse it ever since. It’s clear that this sham impeachment is politically motivated and groundless. It needs to end now.
“We should be spending our time in Congress working on the issues that matter to you and your family. Americans deserve a government that focuses on the people’s priorities, not disgusting political games.”
My questions: How could he take an oath to conduct a fair and impartial trial, and who is lying?

Original sin
How about a reality check on the coverage of the brawl at the Kansas-Kansas State game Wednesday?
First, the incident was started by the blatant lack of sportsmanship by the K-State player who stole the ball after KU was standing down and not attempting to score. KU’s Silvio De Sousa properly ran him down and blocked his shot, then let him know how classless his steal was by standing over him.
The appropriate penalty had been imposed upon the KSU player (shame), and De Sousa would happily accept his appropriate punishment: a technical foul.
The fight was started 100% by two K-State players who attacked De Sousa, who had not even fouled the K-State player. De Sousa and his teammates then finished the fight that the K-State players started — and for that they are portrayed as the instigators.
Further, De Sousa picking up a chair is a non-event. It would have been an event if he had used it. K-State both instigated the event by being classless and started the fight by attacking De Sousa. It’s as simple as that — if you aren’t a part of the clueless pack of sheep called the media.

They’re to teach
One of the best ways to curtail fights in any college sport is to cut the number of scholarships awarded to the teams involved to emphasize that playing on a college team is a privilege. The recent melee at Allen Fieldhouse is a great example that shows colleges’ recruiting practices should also be re-evaluated.
Do these players get screened about their history of violence before joining the team? Are they to be held solely responsible for prosecution off the court when they break the law?
The athletic departments at both Kansas universities got black eyes in this brawl. Maybe the schools should remember they started as academic institutions, not as athletic entertainment venues. That would benefit Kansas taxpayers more in the long term, rather than providing people with a few hours of entertainment.

Hunts’ priorities
Congratulations to the Chiefs and their fans. We are rooting for you.
We now live in California, but were among the first 100 fans who scrounged around for money and with our neighbors purchased season tickets. We were part of the original Wolfpack at the old stadium. We had great fun there and could not wait for the new stadium.
We sat in great seats near the 50-yard line and supported the Chiefs through good and not-so-good times. However, when the new stadium was built, we thought we would get good picks for our seats — but it was not so. Our choices were in the upper deck on the 15-yard line. Boy, were we surprised and disappointed.
When we protested to the Hunt family, our letter was directed elsewhere. The explanation, of course, was that corporations got first choice.
So the Hunts like the corporations first and the diehard fans last. It’s just a sad reminder that money is king.
We still love the Chiefs and support them long distance but are disappointed in the Hunts. Sour grapes, maybe.
