Letters: Readers discuss local action on climate change and Waddell & Reed employees
Leading for future
As our climate crisis deepens, with all of us aware of the increasingly frequent and intense climate effects, let us be thankful during this holiday season for those in our community striving to make a difference.
In early 2019, the Climate Action KC coalition was founded by Lindsey Constance, Shawnee City Council member, and Mike Kelly, Roeland Park mayor. This month, the coalition published a policy playbook for local leaders, providing guidance for actions to reduce their communities’ carbon footprints.
In May, the Kansas City Council passed a resolution urging congressional passage of a carbon fee and dividend system to reduce U.S. carbon emissions.
This summer, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II of Missouri’s 5th District became the 60th co-sponsor of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, a bill embracing a carbon fee and dividend.
These leaders, along with many others, are responding to the increasing concern among regional citizens over our climate crisis, the increasing alarm among the scientific community and their own consciences.
For their efforts in attempting to create a livable world for future generations, these leaders deserve our heartfelt appreciation.

That’s a chunk
Do you wonder what the lower-paid Kansan employees of Waddell & Reed think of the move from Kansas to Missouri, which will cost them 1% of their pay for Kansas City’s earnings tax?
