When anyone speaks against our freedom to own as many guns as we can collect, we are always told that knives and hammers are also deadly and should be treated the same as a gun.
I’d like someone to tell me how a lone wolf could have accomplished the decimation of so many lives in no more than 15 minutes with hammers or knives.

Back in the early 1980s, I was sitting at home with my parents when my father, a 30-year veteran of the Kansas City Police Department, turned to me and said, “I’m quitting my membership in the NRA. I don’t like their policies and future plans.”
I have often wished over the years that I had asked my late father what he meant. But after Sandy Hook, Orlando and now Las Vegas, we all know what my father meant, don’t we, folks?
The Republican Party will do nothing to help protect our people. I urge all members of the NRA to please do the same as my policeman father did: Resign from your memberships in the NRA.
It is time for sensible gun-control laws and background checks that would protect our country and our law enforcement personnel, but that won’t happen until we all stand together and say, “Enough.”

Our departing Royals players should show the class of George Brett.
Brett played his entire major league career in Kansas City and is revered to this day. All that Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas and Alcides Escobar have to do is tell their agents that they all want to stay in Kansas City and insist that the team negotiates with them as a group.
It would be less money for the players (but they’re already millionaires) and less money for their agents (so what?), but it would prove their love for the city.
Any money saved by the Royals could be spent on rebuilding the pitching staff.
What do you say, guys?

You are 82 years old. Your family is well taken care of. You can’t take your money with you when you die.
Please pry open your checkbook and keep our Royals team together. The city and Royals fans everywhere contributed greatly to your impressive capital gain.

Excellent show
I have been enjoying performances at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre for more than 40 years. In that time, I’ve learned to depend on it for consistently presenting a high caliber of theater.
Last Saturday, I attended the Rep’s production of “Between the Lines.” I have to say it was unequivocally the best production I’ve ever seen at our venerable hometown theater. Based on the response of the packed house around me throughout the evening and at the show’s conclusion, I would guess that many others would agree.
The well-cast mix of out-of-town and local professional actors carried the poignantly tender yet equally entertaining material to impressive heights of performance.
The leading characters’ singing voices amazed from opening to curtain call in expression and range. And they were well matched by voices up and down the cast. The mermaid trio almost stopped the show.
Also well-deserved accolades go to the sometimes gasp-inducing production values in sets and lighting. I loved the “Pride and Prejudice”-enamored librarian’s pas de deux with a shadow Mr. Darcy, as well as the painted butterflies flying off the paper.
Wow, Kansas City Rep — thank you. Well done. Your founder Patricia McIlrath, “Dr. Mac,” was smiling.
