President Barack Obama has nominated Judge Merrick Garland to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Garland would replace the recently deceased Antonin Scalia.

But the president’s decision set off an immediate denunciation from Republicans, led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
