Thousands of refugees fleeing wars in Syria and Iraq are flooding Europe.

Their plight is posing excruciating questions for western nations, including the United States, which currently resettles about 70,000 refugees a year from a variety of countries. It has taken in 1,500 refugees from the Syrian conflict.
