A bill backed by Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo of Kansas, passed by the U.S. House last week, would prohibit states and localities from requiring labels on food products containing genetically modified ingredients. Three New England states already have passed such laws and others are trying to.

The legislation lands smack in the middle of a cultural and consumer debate over the science of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and the value of labeling.
