How cars get stolen in KC in one simple step: Drivers leave idling vehicles unattended

Kansas City car owners are making it way too easy for criminals: Of the 105 vehicles stolen in the city during the last week, more than half were left running with the keys in the ignition.

It should go without saying — but apparently does not — that an empty, idling car is an open invitation for thieves to ride off with your Honda.

Kansas City police took to Twitter this week to remind residents that it is actually against the law to leave a running vehicle unattended, even in the dead of winter.

“Look what you helped him do,” the police department tweeted, borrowing liberally from the Sam Smith and Normani hit song, “Dancing with a Stranger.” “You(r) car’s with somebody new. Oooo baby baby, you left it running unattended. It’s stolen, It’s stolen. You left it running unattended.”

Yes, it’s cold outside. And yes, you’ll just be a minute. But shivering criminals will steal your car right out from under your nose — and right off your own driveway.

To state the ultra-obvious: The simplest way to avoid being a victim of car theft during the winter months is to turn off your vehicle and take your keys with you.
