A domestic violence case involving a star National Football League player is receiving plenty of public attention, deservedly so.

A video emerged last week showing Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens knocking out his then-girlfriend in February in a casino elevator. The Ravens immediately released Rice, and the NFL indefinitely suspended him.

Rice already had been suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for only the first two games of the 2014 season in connection with the incident. That had prompted many to criticize Goodell and the NFL for their lax responses to domestic violence. Goodell last month finally agreed to take tougher stands against players involved in future cases.
