The fate of Kemper Arena is on Kansas City’s front burner this summer. A City Council committee is studying competing plans, which would either demolish and replace the city-owned landmark or renovate and reuse it while building a new facility for the American Royal Association.

American Royal officials are adamant that the two plans are incompatible and they argue that its vision makes more sense for the city and West Bottoms development in general.

City officials are trying to determine whether the plans can work together, giving a new life for the architecturally distinctive but woefully underused Kemper while also helping the American Royal achieve its goal of improvement and growth.
