That sound you hear is the thwacking of bats on balls emanating from the Kansas City Royals’ spring training camp in Surprise, Ariz.

Some baseball fans tune their inner clocks to this annual return of the sport and the harbinger of a new season. After the Royals’ magical run in 2014, there’s even more reason for rising expectations.

National baseball writers have lowered expectations for the Royals in the coming year, though they see the American League Central Division as perhaps the most competitive.
