Lorenzo Cain’s grip on outfield spot is slipping in All-Star Game voting

The latest All-Star Game voting update, which came Tuesday, showed no change in the number of Royals who are in line to start.

Catcher Salvador Perez still leads all American League players in voting (2,064,459), while Eric Hosmer leads the vote at first base and Lorenzo Cain is third in the outfield.

But Cain’s lead over fourth-place Mark Trumbo was sliced to nearly nothing. The Angels’ Mike Trout is the leading among outfielders (1,812,731), followed by Boston’s Jackie Bradley, Jr. (1,322,929), Cain (1,146,885) and Trumbo (1,110,720). Boston’s Mookie Betts is close behind (1,069,912).

Last week, Cain’s lead over Trumbo was more than 121,000 votes.

Hosmer has received 1,614,016 votes, well ahead of second-place Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers (1,092,077).

Houston’s Jose Altuve leads at second base (1,230,619), ahead of Seattle’s Robinson Cano (767,882) and the Royals’ Omar Infante (711,439).

At shortstop, Boston’s Xander Bogaerts (1,541,180) is leading over the Royals’ Alcides Escobar (958,750). Baltimore’s Manny Machado (1,234,388) has a big lead over injured Royal Mike Moustakas (824,747).

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz (2,015,043) leads the Royals’ Kendrys Morales (739,284).

Baltimore’s Matt Wieters (672,822) is a distant second to Perez in voting for catcher.

National League voting leaders will be announced on Wednesday. Voting ends on June 30 at 10:59 p.m. The All-Star Game is July 12 in San Diego.
