Alex Gordon was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup due to lingering pain in his right wrist. Gordon suffered the initial injury while sliding on the bases in Cleveland. The team announced the injury as a sprain, but Gordon indicated he was scheduled for a more comprehensive examination on Thursday in Kansas City.
“I can’t swing,” Gordon said. “That’s when it hurts.”
Gordon said he could gauge his own level of concern until he underwent an MRI and other tests on Thursday.
“I wish I could tell you,” Gordon said. “But I don’t know exactly what’s wrong.”

Starting pitcher Jason Vargas needs an appendectomy. He won’t return to Kansas City until Friday. Bruce Chen expected to start in his place Sunday.
Vargas reported no symptoms immediately after starting on Tuesday night. He turned ill around 3 a.m., manager Ned Yost said. Trainer Nick Kenney took him the hospital in the afternoon.
“He was throwing up and not feeling good,” Yost said. “I don’t know if it’s a virus, or something he ate. Try to get some fluids in him or something.”
Also, a stomach virus kept Mike Moustakas out of the Royals lineup Wednesday. Moustakas was at least still on the premises.
“Moose is in the training room,” Yost said. “Looking like death warmed over.”
