Storm Chasers knock off Iowa

Whit Merrifield fell a home run shy of a cycle (yeah, that’s a big one) on Monday as Class AAA Omaha beat Iowa 7-3.

Merrifield raised his average to .384 with the three-hit game. In 28 games with the Storm Chasers, he has a slash line of .384/.407/.563. Center fielder Paulo Orlando also went three for four with a double and raised his average to .311.

Ryan Verdugo, 5-2, allowed three runs on five his in five innings. He walked two and struck out six. Spencer Patton and Louis Coleman each pitched two scoreless innings.

**Class AA Northwest Arkansas was held to three singles in a 6-1 loss to Frisco. Tim Melville allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.

**Center fielder Bubba Starling had three hits and two RBIs, helping Class A-Advanced Wilmington bet Potomac 5-1. Second baseman Ramon Torres had two hits, while shortstop Raul Mondesi had a double and triple and one RBI. Third baseman Jared Schlehuber hit a solo homer and walked twice. Starter Luis Santos, 2-1, allowed one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked one.

**The top four hitters in Class A Lexington’s lineup each had two hits in the Legends’ 9-2 win at Hickory. Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado, Kenny Diekroeger and Frank Schwindel also scored twice, while Mauricio Ramos had three RBIs. Starter Matt Tenuta, 4-7, allowed a run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings.

**Rookie Burlington was held to five hits and lost 4-0 to Bluefield. Starter Corey Ray gave up just one run on six hits in three innings.
