Jason Vargas leads Royals’ pitching matchups for Tigers series

Billy Butler called this “the biggest series of the year,” and he’s right. The Royals will spend the next four days at Comerica Park, and they have a chance to leave on Thursday evening as the leaders of the American League Central.

Winners of seven in a row, the Royals trimmed the Tigers’ lead to one and a half games heading into this week. Here are the matchups in the Motor City:

Monday, 6:08 p.m.: Jason Vargas (6-2, 3.30 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (6-6, 4.61 ERA).

Tuesday, 6:08 p.m.: Yordano Ventura (4-5, 3.20 ERA) vs. Max Scherzer (8-2, 3.05 ERA).

Wednesday, 12:08 p.m.: Jeremy Guthrie (3-6, 4.04 ERA) vs. Drew Smyly (3-5, 3.58 ERA).

Thursday, 12:08 p.m.: Danny Duffy (4-5, 2.83 ERA) vs. Anibel Sanchez (3-2, 2.44 ERA).
