Royals finalize deal with reliever Joakim Soria, still seek another starter and outfielder

Joakim Soria passed his physical on Thursday, which finalized his three-year, $25 million contract with the Royals. The team announced the deal early in the evening, hours after team officials departed the Winter Meetings.

Soria, the 31-year-old former two-time All-Star with the Royals, served as one of the two key additions the team made this past week. The other, Chris Young, signed a two-year, $11.5 million deal and will join the starting rotation. The team is still in the market for another starting pitcher and an outfielder.

Soria posted a 2.53 ERA for the Tigers and Pirates in 2015. He has a 2.99 ERA since leaving the Royals’ organization after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012.

Soria will earn $7 million in 2016, $8 million in 2017 and $9 million in 2018. The contract also features a $1 million buyout of a $10 million mutual option for 2019.

The contract could also become quite richer. Soria can earn up to $4 million each season based on incentives for games started, games finished and innings pitched.
