The Royals announced Wednesday that they hired former catcher Jamie Quirk as manager of Class A-Advanced Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Quirk started last season as manager of Class AA San Antonio (in the Padres’ system) before taking over as manager for Class AAA El Paso.

Brian Buchanan was the manager for the Blue Rocks last season.

Quirk, 61, had three stints with the Royals as a player (1975-76, 1978-82 and 1985-88). He batted .245 with 30 homers in 1,508 plate appearances with the Royals. He also was the Royals bullpen coach from 1994-95 and bench coach from 1996-2001.
