Royals add reliever Casey Coleman, designate Justin Maxwell for assignment

The Royals added another reliever to their bullpen on Friday afternoon, purchasing the contract of right-hander Casey Coleman from Omaha while designating outfielder Justin Maxwell for assignment.

Maxwell, 30, was batting just .138 with a .391 on-base plus slugging in 29 at-bats. The fifth outfielder on the 25-man roster, Maxwell had batted just eight times in May.

Coleman was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings for Class AAA Omaha after signing as a minor-league free agent on April 15. He was released by the Cubs on April 14. Coleman recorded a 5.76 ERA in 48 appearances (26 starts) for the Cubs from 2010-12.
