Dziedzic continues fine season at Wilmington
Left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic struck out eight in seven innings and Class A-Wilmington took advantage of two Salem errors in a 4-2 win on Tuesday.
Dziedzic, who threw 62 of his 94 pitches for strikes, allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. He didn’t walk a batter and his ERA dropped to 1.59. After allowing two runs in his first start of the season, Dziedzic has given up one or zero runs in his last six starts. He has 44 strikeouts and eight walks this season in 39 2/3 innings.
Mark Peterson walked one and gave up one hit in two innings and got his seventh save of the season.
Wilmington scored three runs in the third inning on just one hit. Terrance Gore led off and walked, stole second and scored when Raul Mondesi reached on an error by the center fielder. Mondesi scored on a wild pitch.
Bubba Starling and Hunter Dozier followed with walks. After two outs, Jack Lopez singled home Starling.
**Four pitchers combined on a three-hitter as Class AAA Omaha beat New Orleans 5-0. Francisley Bueno started and allowed one hit in three innings. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter. Brett Tomko, 2-3, got pitched four innings of one-hit ball. He walked two and struck out three. Buddy Baumann pitched a hitless inning and Spencer Patton struck out two in the ninth. One day after hitting for the cycle and knocking in eight, Jimmy Paredes had two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Brian Fletcher had two hits and Pedro Ciriaco was zero for one before being pulled from the game and recalled by the Royals.
**Tim Melville struck out 10 in five innings, but gave up four runs in his final inning of work as Class AA Northwest Arkansas lost 4-3 at Arkansas. Whit Merrifield had three hits, including a solo homer, while catcher Juan Graterol, first baseman Mark Threlkeld and DH Edinson Rincon each had two hits. Rincon also had two RBIs.
**Designated hitter Chad Johnson hit a grand slam in the third inning and Jake Junis and two relievers made it stand up in a 4-3 win at Greensboro. Junis allowed two runs on three hits over six innings with six strikeouts and a walk. He allowed back-to-back homers in the second inning. Alex Black allowed one run in two innings and Kevin Perez got the save despite allowing a hit and walking two in the ninth inning.
