Sean Manaea gets first pro victory (with video)

Left-hander Sean Manaea got his first professional victory Monday night as Class A-Advanced Wilmington beat Myrtle Beach 2-1.

Its my first professional win, its pretty awesome, Manaea told reporters after the game. Its pretty awesome to get my first win.

Manaea struck out eight in five innings, allowing the one run on four hits. He walked one and threw a wild pitch. Manaea, who was selected by the Royals with the 34th overall pick in last years draft, threw 77 pitches and 52 were for strikes.

I was using fastball, slider, he said. I still was having trouble throwing my change-up for a strike. My slider, I changed the grip from last time. Its more horizontal than vertical.

It was the third time Manaea faced the Pelicans, and this time was much better than the other two. He allowed seven runs in two innings to Myrtle Beach in his last start on April 20. In his first game of the season, he gave up four runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings.

Mark Peterson was even better than Manaea, retiring all 12 batters he faced and got his fourth save of the season.

Wilmington had just two hits in the game, but the Blue Rocks walked eight times. In the fifth inning, Wilmington scored a run without a hit as Daniel Rockett, Raul Mondesi, Bubba Starling and Hunter Dozier all walked.

The other run scored when Johermyn Chavez reached on an error in the second inning and scored after a single by Cam Gallagher and another error.
