Mondesi’s strikeout helps Wilmington win

There’s been a lot written about 18-year-old shortstop Raul Mondesi, and this will only add to the hype.

Class A-Advanced Wilmington beat Myrtle Beach 5-4 on Saturday night when Mondesi

struck out

in the bottom of the ninth inning. Here’s how it went down:

The Blue Rocks trailed 4-3 in the ninth, but Daniel Rockett was on first with one out. The Pelicans’ Sam Stafford threw a wild pitch, allowing Rockett to take second and he advanced to third on an error by the catcher.

After Kenny Diekroeger struck out, Terrance Gore doubled home Rockett, tying the game 4-4. Gore then stole third. Mondesi then struck out. However, it was a wild pitch on the third strike and Mondesi reached first as Gore raced home with the winning run.

Mondesi actually had a rough night, going zero for five with four strikeouts. Gore had two hits, while Mark Donato added an RBI triple. Bubba Starling doubled and scored.

Starter Christian Binford allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits. he walked two and struck out seven. Kyle Bartsch, 1-2, pitched two hitless innings. He walked one and struck out three.
