Lexington wins wild one; Collins strikes out side at Omaha

When Class A Lexington broke a tie by scoring five runs in the top of the ninth inning Friday at Greenville, the Legends had to be feeling pretty comfortable.

However, the Drive pushed four runs across in the bottom of the ninth before the Legends stemmed the tide.

It was 4-4 when designated hitter Samir Duenez doubled with one out. Shortstop Humberto Arteaga’s RBI single gave the Legends the lead, and then catcher Chad Johnson was hit by a pitch. Left fielder Dominique Taylor’s single scored Arteaga, and center fielder Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado walked to load the bases.

Second baseman Ramon Torres hit a sacrifice fly, third baseman Michael Antonio added an RBI single and Escalera-Maldonado scored after a wild pitch. That made it 9-4 when Matt Alvarez took the mound.

Greenville had two singles sandwiched around two walks to open the inning and Alvarez threw a wild pitch that scored another run, making it 9-6. Alvarez struck out two straight batters before allowing a two-run single. However, he got a ground out to end the game.

Torres finished with three RBIs and a double, while Duenez had two hits, including a double. Taylor also had two hits.

Starter Jake Junis allowed three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

each had two hits, while Bonifacio knocked in three runs, giving him 16 RBIs on the season.
