Almonte gives up one hit in six innings as Wilmington splits twinbill
Miguel Almonte pitched one-hit ball over six innings Wednesday night and Class A-Advanced Wilmington scored seven times in the sixth inning of a 7-2 win at Lynchburg in in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Hillcats won the nightcap 3-2.
In the first game, Almonte walked two and struck out seven without allowing a run as he ERA dropped to 2.60. In the sixth-inning rally, second baseman Jack Lopez, designated hitter Daniel Rockett and left fielder Terrance Gore each had two RBIs. Rockett also had two doubles in the game and Raul Mondesi had a triple to open the sixth inning.
Mondesi had three of Wilmington’s six hits in the nightcap, while Bubba Starling had a hit and scored a run. Blue Rocks starter Yender Caramo gave up three runs on six hits in four innings.
Other games• Lefty John Lamb gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings and Class AAA Omaha lost 8-2 to Round Rock. Lamb struck out five, walked one and gave up three home runs. Reliever Donnie Joseph got just one out in the eighth as he allowed three runs (one earned) with two walks and one hit. Catcher Francisco Pena had a solo homer and Matt Fields’ season-opening hitting streak continued as he hit in his 13th straight.
• Left-hander Sam Selman allowed three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings as Class AA Northwest Arkansas lost 7-0 at Tulsa. Selman walked three, hit a batter and had a wild pitch. The Naturals had just two hits in the game. Cheslor Cuthbert walked three times for the Naturals.
• Rome scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and won it with another run in the 11th as the Braves beat Class A Lexington 4-3. Kevin Perez gave up the run in the ninth and Cesar Ogando gave up the winning run. Starter Matt Tenuta allowed just one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts. Legends third baseman Mauricio Ramos had two hits, including an RBI triple.
