Royals prospect Sean Manaea throws five shutout innings in Wilmington's win

Left-hander Sean Manaea gave up four hits in five shutout innings on Monday, but didn’t get a decision in Class A-Advanced Wilmington’s 3-1 home win against Winston-Salem.

Manaea left with a 1-0 lead, but reliever Aroni Nina gave up a run in the eighth that tied the game. In the bottom of the inning, Cam Gallagher singled, Mark Donato walked and Terrance Gore was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Raul Mondesi grounded to second, but the throw to the plate was off the mark, allowing Gallagher and Donato to score.

Manaea struck out five in his five innings with one walk.

“You can tell he was a lot more relaxed tonight on the mound than his first outing,” manager Darryl Kennedy told The News Journal when asked about Manaea. “He was a little more comfortable and was able to relax and do some things with his pitches. He’s got a power fastball and a good change-up, and tonight he showed them.”

Designated hitter Michael Antonio had three hits, including a double and a two-run home run, scored three times and knocked in three runs. Left fielder Fred Ford had two hits and four RBIs. Catcher Chad Johnson (two hits, four RBIs), first baseman Frank Schwindel (three hits, two runs), third baseman Mauricio Ramos (four runs), second baseman Ramon Torres (two hits, including a double) and right fielder Elier Hernandez (two hits, four runs) all had big games.

The outpouring of runs came in support of Jake Junis, who pitched two-hit ball over six innings with three strikeouts and a walk.
