The good news and bad news in Royals minor leagues Tuesday

The good news for Class A-Wilmington is that Bubba Starling hit a three-run home run on Tuesday night. The bad news? There was little more offense than that in the Blue Rocks’ 5-3 loss to Myrtle Beach.

Left-hander Sean Manaea, the Royals’ No. 6 prospect according to Baseball America, made his first start as a member of the Royals. He allowed four runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Manaea also hit a batter.

Shortstop Raul Mondesi had his second straight two-hit game for the Blue Rocks.

The good news for Lexington is Austin Fairchild didn’t allow a hit in his six innings pitched of the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Rome Braves. The bad news is he took the loss, allowing an unearned run and then watching Cesar Ogando give up two runs in the seventh of a 3-0 loss in the seven-inning game.

The Legends won the opener 4-3. Third baseman Mauricio Ramos had two doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. Reliever Kevin McCarthy pitched three hitless innings and got the win.

The good news for the Naturals is that outfielder Jorge Bonfiacio hit a grand slam. The bad news is the Northwest Arkansas pitching staff got body-slammed in a 20-8 loss at Midland, Texas.

Every Naturals player had at least one hit, including three from second baseman Justin Trapp. However, every Rockhounds player had at least two hits as they pounded out 23 in the game.

Starter Jason Adam gave up eight runs (six earned) in three innings. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out one. The subsequent four relievers all allowed at least one run.

The good news for the Storm Chasers is that a bunch of their relievers are with the Royals. Wait, that’s not good news. They gave up six runs in the ninth inning and lost 9-4 to Memphis.

Justin Marks allowed all six runs, but just two were earned. Marks walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth, then gave up a single. The next batter bunted but reached on an error by Marks that scored a run. The next batter was hit by a pitch and then Memphis got two RBI singles sandwiched around a strikeout.

Buddy Baumann relieved and induced a popup in foul ground but it was dropped by Brian Bocock. Given a second chance, Scott Moore hit a two-run double, and two more walks forced in a run.

Outfielder Paulo Orlando had three hits for the Storm Chasers.
