Duffy pitches well in season debut in Class AAA Omaha
Left-hander Danny Duffy had a successful season debut Sunday at Class AAA Omaha.
Duffy allowed five hits, walked a batter and struck out four in six innings as the Storm Chasers held off Nashville 6-5 at home. Duffy threw 51 of his 79 pitches for strikes, and he picked a runner off first base.
“I’m never good in the spring,” Duffy told the
. “I’m always trying to get my feel back. And I put a lot of pressure on myself this year, coming in knowing I’d be competing with the guy with the best stuff on the planet in (Yordano) Ventura. And the kid shoved (pitched great) in spring. Hat’s off to him — I’m proud of him for how far he’s come.”
The World-Herald said Duffy’s fastball was clocked in the 91-95 mph range."
After his strong outing, Duffy watched Ramon Troncoso allow two runs in the seventh and Michael Mariot gave up a run in the ninth on a single, two wild pitches and a groundout.
Center fielder Brett Eibner and right fielder Gorkys Hernandez each had two hits and saw his average raise to .333. Second baseman Johnny Giavotella had two hits, including a double and knocked in a run. Shortstop Christian Colon doubled home two runs.
OTHER GAMES
• Sugar Ray Marimon allowed three hits in six shutout innings, but Scott Alexander allowed two runs in the eighth inning and Class AA Northwest Arkansas lost 2-1 at Midland, Texas. Marimon didn’t walk a batter, but had just one strikeout. He threw 75 pitches, 45 for strikes. Justin Trapp’s RBI single scored Jared Schlehuber in the second inning for the Naturals’ lone run.
• Designated hitter Zane Evans had four hits, including two doubles, and knocked in the lone run as Class A-Advanced Wilmington lost 7-1 at Winston-Salem. Evans has six doubles in the Blue Rocks’ first four games. he is hitting .556 with a 1.444 OPS.
