Royals give Mike Moustakas a second night off to rest sore hamstring

Despite a sore right hamstring, Mike Moustakas stumped to play on Tuesday night and felt confident he could start on Wednesday night. But manager Ned Yost kept him out of the lineup for both games against the Detroit Tigers and he indicated he may do the same for Thursday night’s series finale.

“He’s been battling it for the last week,” Yost said. “Let’s see if we can get on the good side of it.”

Rookie Cheslor Cuthbert started at third base on Wednesday. The day before, it was Ben Zobrist in Moustakas’ case. With southpaw Matt Boyd taking the mound for Detroit on Thursday, it makes sense for Kansas City to continue to rest Moustakas, a left-handed hitter.

Moustakas did not complain about the rest. He pronounced himself available to pinch hit, as he did on Tuesday.

“I want to go out there and play every single day,” Moustakas said. “But right now, we’re in a spot where I can take a couple days off, and not worry too much about it.”
