Kansas City World Cup proved Missouri can deliver on the global stage | Opinion
As the FIFA World Cup draws to a close, Missouri has countless reasons to celebrate. Kansas City has welcomed the world with energy, professionalism and hospitality. The matches showcased a great city and demonstrated what is possible when an entire state rallies around a shared opportunity.
And while Kansas City hosted the matches, the impact extends to all of Missouri.
International travelers increasingly seek authentic Americana, places that tell the story of the United States through music, sports, food, history and culture. Few states deliver that experience better than Missouri. From Kansas City’s cuisine and entertainment to Route 66, to St. Louis’ Gateway Arch and Forest Park, our state offers experiences visitors cross oceans to find.
Soccer fans arrived to watch matches at Arrowhead Stadium, then explored communities, visited attractions, dined in our restaurants and stayed in hotels throughout Missouri. In St. Louis, we are seeing record international visitor spending during the tournament — an unmistakable reminder that when Missouri attracts the world, the benefits extend beyond the host city.
This incredible success did not happen by accident. Kathy Nelson and her team have delivered an extraordinary performance. Gov. Mike Kehoe and state Director of Tourism Stephen Foutes understood the statewide significance of this opportunity and helped Missouri make the most of it.
Kansas City’s success strengthened our state’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting the world’s largest events. This was more than a soccer tournament. It proved Missouri can deliver on the global stage, opening the door to future international sporting events, conventions and cultural gatherings.
Thank you, Kansas City, for giving the world an unforgettable welcome. In doing so, you’ve created opportunity for all of Missouri. That is something every Missourian can celebrate.
