Royals first base coach Rusty Kuntz did not travel with the team for this two-game series against the Reds, as he remains in Kansas City fighting a sinus infection.
Manager Ned Yost hopes Kuntz will rejoin the team in Boston on Thursday. The illness has made him dizzy and unable to handle his normal responsibilities in the field.
“They gave him a couple of IVs yesterday to get him rehydrated, and he was still dizzy,” Yost said. “So we just said, ‘Look, stay home for these two days. If you feel better, meet us in Boston. If you don’t, we’ll see you when we get home.’”
He added, “Hopefully he’ll be back before too much longer. But he can’t go out there when he’s dizzy.”

Catching coach Pedro Grifol filled in at first base during the most recent series against the Angels. In an unfortunate twist, Grifol has developed back spasms, which meant bench coach Don Wakamatsu was prepared to handle the responsibility on Tuesday.
