Yordano Ventura will return from the disabled list on Thursday and start for the Royals against Tampa Bay, manager Ned Yost said.

Ventura (3-6, 4.68 ERA) has not pitched since June 12 due to ulnar nerve irritation in his right elbow, which has caused bouts of numbness in his fingers. He lost sensation in his hand during a start against St. Louis. During his last rehabilitation start for Class AAA Omaha, he still dealt with a low-level recurrence of these symptoms.

But Kansas City still felt confident enough in Ventura’s condition to assign him to Thursday’s game. He will replace Joe Blanton in the rotation. In his last two outings, Blanton has given up nine runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Blanton will serve as a long reliever in the bullpen.
