The Royals begin a 10-day, nine-game road trip on Monday that takes them from the Pacific Northwest to the Bay Area to the heart of Texas. In Oakland, they will face the Athletics for the first time since the fireworks of April. In Houston, they will duel with a surprisingly ascendant Astros club.

But first they face the Mariners, a team pegged for the playoffs by many prognosticators before the season. Seattle currently resides six games below .500, but the Royals just dropped two of three to the lowly Red Sox at Kauffman Stadium.

One other highlight: On Tuesday the team faces former pitching prospect Mike Montgomery, who was dealt to Tampa Bay as part of the package for James Shields and Wade Davis.

Here are the pitching matchups for this three-game series at Safeco Field:

Monday, 9:10 p.m.: RHP Joe Blanton (1-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. RHP Felix Hernandez (10-3, 3.08 ERA).

Tuesday, 9:10 p.m.: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (5-4, 5.55 ERA) vs. LHP Mike Montgomery (1-2, 2.73 ERA).

Wednesday, 9:10 p.m.: LHP Danny Duffy (2-3, 5.87 ERA) vs. LHP Roenis Elias (4-4, 3.56 ERA).
