Jason Vargas tested the strained flexor muscle in his left elbow by playing catching before the Royals faced the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

The Royals placed Vargas on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. The stint is retroactive to June 9, so Vargas can return to action on June 24. It is unclear whether he will be ready by then, but manager Ned Yost indicated Vargas probably would not require a rehabilitation start.

“He feels like he’s getting his range of motion back, and everything feels a lot better,” Yost said.

Vargas (5-2, 4.10 ERA) verified this report from his manager. An MRI revealed a recurrence of the same injury that let to his time on the disabled list in May. There was no evidence of damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, trainer Nick Kenney said.

Vargas indicated his condition has improved each day.

“It wasn’t getting stiff when it was sitting around, so it was moving a little bit better,” Vargas said.
