The Royals settled on Drew Butera as their backup catcher Thursday, designating Erik Kratz for assignment after reinstating him from the disabled list.
Kratz tore the plantar fascia in his left foot in May. The Royals traded for Butera soon after.
The Royals were believed to prefer Butera’s defensive ability to Kratz’s offensive potential. Kratz was hitless in four at-bats this season with one RBI. Last year, he hit .276 with two home runs in 31 plate appearances.
Neither catcher possesses minor-league options. The move means the Royals have 10 days to trade or release Kratz or expose him to waivers.
