Royals to wait one more day before deciding between Drew Butera, Erik Kratz

The theoretical debate about backup catchers will continue one more day for the Royals. Erik Kratz received a “travel day” on Wednesday after he completed a 20-day rehabilitation assignment, manager Ned Yost said before his team faced the Twins.

So the club still hasn’t made an official determination if Kratz or Drew Butera will be Salvador Perez’s backup.

Yet Butera was with the club. Kratz was not. The Royals are believed to prefer Butera’s defensive ability to Kratz’s offensive potential.

Neither catcher possesses minor-league options. So the Royals must either trade or designate for assignment one of the two.

Kratz tore the plantar fascia in his left foot in May. Kansas City traded for Butera soon after.
