In Thursday’s series finale, Salvador Perez received his second day off on this road trip, and just his third day off in the entire season. Royals manager Ned Yost sat Perez even though the club has scheduled off days next Monday and Thursday.

“You still take advantage of these quick turnaround days for Sal,” Yost said. “He’s been getting beat up pretty good back there, with a lot of foul balls and stuff.”

Drew Butera earned his second start as a Royal. He will team with Jeremy Guthrie. He also caught Guthrie’s gem on Saturday in Detroit.

Perez has slumped through the beginning of this month. After posting an .825 on-base plus slugging percentage in April, Perez is hitting .195 with no walks and only two extra-base hits in May. He leads the American League by grounding into eight double plays.

Lorenzo Cain also rested on Thursday. Cain has a .714 OPS in May.

“His legs are getting beat up, too,” Yost said.
